It takes 1,000 delicious bookmarks to have a revelation.

I’ve just hit a milestone on Delicious. I’ve just hit my 1,000th bookmark today, and if you want to see what it is cick on this link to see my delicious account.

Why is it important, why is it something worth blogging about? Well because it brings me to the point of this post. I want to ask you, the people who visit this site, your opinion on something I have wrestled with.

Recently I have decided that it’s ok for me to add my own articles to Delicious. I used to think it was just shameless self promotion and that I shouldn’t be doing it, and then I realized that I was getting close to 1,000 saves and so my ratio of self promotion vs promotion of others in this ralm is very small.

There is no magic metric I have found for how much self promotion makes you a ME person, but I think 20 posts in 1,0020 is a low enough ratio.

What say you? How do you feel about putting your own info into social bookmarking sites? Do you feel there is a golden ratio that should be adheared to?

Thank you for reading,
Josh “Shua” Peters

    I say go for it!

There is nothing wrong with being a fan of your own work. On your blog you say things that you wanted to be said, so you should be proud to bookmark it.

Besides, If someone is interested in the things that you bookmarked, they should have an endless supply of links to your site!

I don’t need any bookmarks really, I think the concept of bookmarks are kind of a dated metaphor for the early days of web browsing. Sort of a holdover from Gopher where you just had lists of websites. I rely more on Google if I need to look up something. (especially the programming subreddit) does all the work of bookmarking interesting sites for me, all I need to do is search or browse their site.

  • Josh Peters

I use bookmarks to keep track of great information I come across and specific things I might want to reference later. Using Google the search for that doesn’t always mean I will find the article I was thinking of and takes longer. I like having a repository for stuff I deem useful information.

I see no problem with adding your own content to social bookmarking sites. It makes it easier for you to organize what you publish, and, as someone else mentioned, if other people like what you’re writing they may want to save it in their own bookmark collections.

Thanks Chris, I appreciate you taking the time to comment on here and also thanks for validating my reasoning. Sometimes I second guess myself on whether I’m on the side of self promotion or just spamming the internet with my face.
